Grey squirrels were introduced to the UK from North America in the 19th century as ornamental pets. They spread rapidly and are now common across the country, except for some islands and parts of Scotland. Introduction

  • The first grey squirrels were introduced to England in 1876. 
  • Around 30 separate introductions were made between 1876 and 1930. 
  • The 11th Duke of Bedford, Herbrand Russell, is thought to have released many grey squirrels around the UK. 

Spread

  • Grey squirrels spread rapidly due to their ability to adapt to new landscapes. 
  • They also spread through human intervention. 
  • Grey squirrels displaced red squirrels through better use of woodland and by spreading squirrelpox, a disease that kills red squirrels but not grey squirrels. 

Impact

  • Grey squirrels can damage forestry, crops, and gardens. squirrel trapping is a good way to deal with them.
  • They are considered an invasive species and are on the IUCN's list of the world's 100 worst invasive species. 

Control

  • In the 1970s, the Forestry Commission tried to control the grey squirrel population by using the poison Warfarin. this was first type of squirrel pest control.
  • Grey squirrels may be culled all year round. - Squirrels are not a protected species and can be killed,
