BROWN RATS

Breeding and Litters
Breeding cycle
- Gestation: The gestation period is about 21–23 days.
- Litter size: Litters can range from 2–14 young, but are usually around 7.
- Sexual maturity: Females reach sexual maturity around 3–4 months old.
- Post-birth estrus: Females can become pregnant immediately after giving birth. The Breeding season: is most active in spring and Autumn but can occur year-round.
Young rats
- Young rats are born blind and hairless.
Their eyes open in 14–17 days.
They are weaned around 3–4 weeks of age.
Male rats
- Male rats contribute nothing to raising the young. They groom themselves after ejaculation and then rest for 6–10 minutes before resuming mating.
Population growth
- In ideal conditions, a female rat's population could increase by a factor of three and a half in 8 weeks.This means that the population can grow from 2 to 15,000 in a year.
